Every year a national holiday—Día de la Bandera (Flag Day)—celebrates Mexico’s flag, a patriotic symbol rich in meaning and history. The first Flag Day was established by then-President Lázaro Cárdenas on February 24, 1940 in honor of Agustín de Iturbide’s proclamation of independence on February 24, 1821.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, San Miguel attracts people from all over the world. And around Flag Day, San Miguel residents like to show visitors their pride as Mexicans. As you walk through the streets (especially in the downtown area) you can see several flags on display. As we note in this edition of San Miguel in Numbers, there are 18 flags in the streets surrounding Jardín Allende alone, showcasing green, white and red colors in all their splendor.
