The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin

By Fernanda Noriega

In the Catholic religion, the number 7 has a special meaning and is considered an important symbol. This year, on April 8, the Friday of Sorrows is observed, marking the beginning of Holy Week in San Miguel. All over the city, you will see homes open their doors, offering fresh water, preserves, or frozen popsicles and inviting everyone who passes by to enter and appreciate the altars created to honor the Virgin of Dolores. These altars are not only a ritual, they offer scenes worthy of photographing, but they are also filled with symbolism, faith and devotion. In this edition of San Miguel in Numbers, we are providing a list of the seven sorrows commemorated on this day.

1. The prophecy of Simeon

2. The flight into Egypt

3. The loss of the child Jesus

4. The condemnation of Jesus

5. The crucifixion

6. The Retrieval of Jesus’ body from the cross

7. The burial of Jesus and the solitude of the Virgin
