The home is the most important space for any individual. It is where a person’s social nucleus —the family— first takes shape. It is important, then, to create quality indoor and outdoor areas around the home.
Gardening is the art of creating spaces that work with architecture; gardens can complement any construction. Having plants around the home refreshes the environment, protects the soil from erosion, adds oxygen, recreates life, give us peace, provides shade and creates spaces for social coexistence.
When we think about having a garden at home we usually think simply of the beauty that flowers and plants bring to the outdoors. And there is no doubt about that. But there are many other advantages that come from gardening. Gardening is relaxing. Some tasks, such as pruning, planting or simply watering, produce health benefits.
Another advantage of gardening comes with raising fruits or vegetables, having one’s own food production. A garden can add value to any property, and taking care of it becomes a legacy.
Vivero Magueyes wants to support gardening projects in San Miguel de Allende and is offering a how-to course divided into 4 modules. The first module consists of learning about grafting, a method of plant reproduction that allows plants to propagate.
The second module will be on this region’s history and endemic plant species. In order to have an always active space, we need to select plants that can be rotated. The third module will teach how to prune and care for fruit trees and vegetable gardens, and finally the fourth module will be about designing your own garden.
Spring is the best time to start a gardening project; the weather makes it easier for plants to adapt and allows enough time to prepare for the temperature changes of winter.
