The Sanctuary of Atotonilco is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in San Miguel. The church was built in the 18th century, in a baroque style, but special feature is what is within. The interior of the church is adorned with numerous murals of biblical scenes. It is these decorations that have earned it a UNESCO Heritage designation, as well as the informal name of the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico.”
Local residents tend to visit the sanctuary on the eve of Lent. Also, the sculpture of Jesus called the Lord of the Column is kept here, and a traditional procession in its honor is done yearly, bringing the sculpture on a pilgrimage to San Miguel de Allende. Another reason for the importance of Atotonilco is its important role in the history of Mexico during the war of Independence.
