Solidarity support in San Miguel de Allende

By Paola Velasco

Solidarity is a virtue because through it we unite with other people, sharing their interests, concerns, and needs. It is based on respect and empathy that allows us to understand that the other person needs our collaboration or support.

Actions of solidarity are those that we carry out for the benefit of our neighbor without an apparent reward. These acts are genuine; they are born from the will to support our brothers and sisters and the community.

But how can we be more supportive and bring this practice to our lives? Here I share some examples of how to actively participate in the community where we live:

Practice volunteering as a good way to share your talents, your knowledge, and your time.

Donate what you no longer use at home and is in good condition (clothes, furniture, etc.).

Educate your children in solidarity. Be an example for the people around you, especially your family members.

Participate in programs and actions for the improvement of your city—cleaning the dam or reforestation campaigns, for example. It all adds up!

Support people in hospitals, nursing homes, or orphanages. Offer company and give affection.

Being supportive is maintaining an attentive attitude in your day-to-day life. Acts of solidarity can be carried out anywhere and at any time. There’s no need to travel to faraway locations; there are many opportunities in San Miguel de Allende for actions that enable solidarity. Indeed, one thing that distinguishes the San Miguel foreign community is its participation in civil associations, foundations, and NGOs. They are an example of solidarity for many causes. These actions strengthen the bonds of a community and seek the well-being of others.
