What to do in San Miguel de Allende: Theater Series at the Sindicato

By Paola Velasco

For many years, the El Sindicato community cultural center, which is overseen by Cristina Solís, has fought tirelessly to bring San Miguel a worthy space for cultural, artistic, and traditional events. At a recent press conference, the center announced an upcoming performance arts program from September 3 to December 10 that will include 20 different productions selected from artists and performance groups who competed across the country as part of the Mexico Ministry of Culture’s National Circuit of Performing Arts in Independent Spaces project.

This project is an initiative of the Ministry’s Hellenic Cultural Center, with a goal of encouraging and funding the post-pandemic economic reactivation of performing arts groups throughout the country. According to Hellenic Center Director Antonio Zúñiga Chaparro, the program’s call for participation resulted in the selection of 134 artistic groups from all over Mexico that will offer 1,340 theater and interdisciplinary performances over four months of tours in independent scenic spaces.

In San Miguel, 20 of these performances from Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán, Querétaro, and Guanajuato will come to El Sindicato almost every weekend this fall, providing entertainment for all ages. The events will be reasonably priced to bring theater closer to the general population, and there will be discounted prices for schools and for those in need.

“The theater represents us; it is the way to identify with each other through a series of elements that sensitize and educate us emotionally. The artist speaks to us; the theater brings us closer to aesthetics and ethics,” said Mónica Hoth, playwright and puppeteer, who has served many times on the selecting jury.
