On October 16, to mark World Food Day, Feed the Hungry San Miguel de Allende organized an event for the whole family at Viñedo Dos Búhos, with the aim of raising funds to support the School Lunch Meals program that currently serves 4,000 meals a day. The event, “Walk-Run-Bike for Food Challenge,” was primarily sponsored by INMTEC Legal Services.
About 250 people attended and participated in physical activity challenges. Each of the participants received a symbolic medal to recognize their effort. The event was a success, and reached its goal: to be able to offer 100,000 school meals for the next few months.
World Food Day is commemorated every year by the United Nations and is one of its 17 global goals for people and the planet. The 2022 theme is “Leave No One Behind” and aims to ensure that nutritious food reaches every corner of the world.
“We want our school meals model to be replicated throughout Mexico. School meals do more than just satisfy hunger. According to principals in the schools we serve, attendance increases by up to 20 percent when children receive a hot meal at school. Their wellbeing improves and they are more alert and able to learn. Additionally, children uplift the entire community as they move toward success in life,” said Al Kocourek, president of Feed the Hungry San Miguel, Inc.
Feed the Hungry also delivered emergency food and hygiene supplies to more than 20,000 local residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, from March 2020 to June 2022, when schools reopened and were able to continue working with their 34 School Lunch Meals programs for free in disadvantaged communities.
