Women in Music, muses and performers

By Paola Velasco

On November 11 we will have a magnificent concert at the Ángela Peralta Theater. Women in Music will be a journey through different genres such as zarzuelas, opera pieces, and Mexican music. This concert, with free admission, is made possible thanks to the efforts of the Instituto Estatal de Cultura del Estado de Guanajuato and the Instituto del Migrante de Guanajuato y del Estado de Chicago. The concert will be presented by two women who unite their talents for an event with a cause.

The magical voice of soprano Sindy Gutierrez, a native of Guanajuato, has participated in international festivals in countries such as Germany, Italy, and recently her third participation in the Cervantino Festival. Gutierrez has a very special stage presence and charisma, a great ambassador of Guanajuato’s talent, specialist in traditional Mexican music, and classical opera.

On the piano we will have Saraí Buchanan, born in the city of Chicago, daughter of a Mexican mother, who is deeply excited to perform in San Miguel de Allende. She has visited more than 30 times but this is the first time she comes as a pianist. Buchanan has played on international stages as a soloist accompanied by great artists, generally being the only Mexican woman. It has been a challenge for her to prepare the pieces of Mexican concert music. “It is very complex, it has a great number of musical ranges, and on the piano I play them all,” she says.

Her Mexican roots connect deeply with her experience, achieving unforgettable musical moments.
