Alternative And Complimentary Medicine

By Marie Oliveras

The fall season is starting here in San Miguel Allende! New festivals, The Day Of The Dead, food, drinks, and fun times with family and friends are in our mists. The holidays are an important time to take vacations, see family and friends; as well as, the resolution to be a better a better you. Like the old saying goes, ¨When you look good you feel good!¨ I am offering a ¨Fresh Fall Look¨ promotion. This promotion will help contribute to the new project I am ensuing. I will be rescuing dogs from kill shelters in Mexico and rehabbing and training them for service work for the disabled people in our community. I hope to help more people across Mexico in the future also. I have many years experience working with animals in rehab, providing chiropractic and acupuncture therapies; I was an assistant to many Vets in surgical suites in the US. I also have experience in training service dogs in PTSD, hold and carry, med dogs, and now I am adding Seeing Eye dogs, and training service dogs for the hearing impaired to alter their owners.

I am not a part of an NGO, or non-for-profit. I am simply taking a portion of the profits from the services I provide in my office at La Joya Hospital; as well as, the classes I provide at the private gym I run. The people who want to support me in my project to help others will be doing so by choosing me as there service provider for the ¨Fall Fresh Look¨ promotion. This is promotion is for men and women alike, everyone wants to look good for the holidays!

I wanted to restart my service dog training program again after I watched a man using his cane almost walk off the side walk and then corrected himself and then just missed a pole in front of a restaurant on the Ancha. I said to myself allowed, ¨He could use a little help.¨This is a passion of mine, due to the fact, I suffer from PTSD. I had an amazing service dog during my educational process and then we came to Mexico, he died shortly after we arrived due to old age.

Guch was a giant black pit-bull rescued from a fighting ring in Florida. He was never aggressive toward another dog after I adopted him. His training consisted of coming to all of my classes except the cadaver labs, visiting restaurants, traveling on elevators, air planes, trains, sitting in loud places in a small spaces for extended periods of time. Guch was also very sweet with children and had exposure to large and small children; including infants. Guch was sensitive to others health aliments also. Guch was the perfect representative for what his breed can do, even with the negative stories that are associated with his breed. Fortunately, under US Federal Law, service dogs are not restricted by breed. My mission was to take the guardian dog breeds and train them for service work and they were federally protected. I had the government card with most important laws listed and an 800 number for people with complaints or questions to call if the occasion rose.

I trained service dogs for many different health alignments. I loved donating my services to the Veterans who suffered from PTSD. This, I could identify with. I allowed one Vet to have one dog trained for free. I picked up the dogs and dropped the dogs off after the training program. I then had the task of showing the recipient of the service dog how the dog would function for them and the commands. Now, I find we need some services here in Mexico for service dogs, specifically San Miguel. They have recognition and registration in CDMX currently. The service dogs are allowed to accompany their disabled owner where ever the owner needs to go, including the hospital, bathrooms, restaurants, stores, malls, movies theaters, anywhere; expect surgical suites. The people who discriminate against a service dog owner or do not allow access to the person with a disability have legal consequences protected by law. They cannot harass or interrogate the person about their medical condition or demand proof or antagonize the dog. In the US it is a felony to do so.

I have seen many people try to pass off a dog as a service dog and it is just a pet. This is really irritating to me and offensive. You can tell by the training of the dog, if it is a service dog. A vest, card, or tag does nothing and many of those things are scams people use to get their dog on a free flight or into the hotel for vacation. I am hoping to help fix this in the future, so the people who really need these service dogs do not have problems because the actions of dishonest people.

I would like the community to help me pick a name for this new program, since you will be the ones who are helping me get this off the ground, so to speak.  Please feel free to inbox me on FaceBook: Marie Angel. Give me your name suggestions for the program and I will pick December 1, 2022 and we can all celebrate together before the Christmas season starts! I will then contact people who have access to the disabled in the community who will benefit from a free service dog. I plan to get a house with 3 rooms and a large space for 5 dogs to be trained at a time. I will have people who volunteer to live in the house and care for the dogs rent free! I will have trainers helping me with the program. I will match a person who needs a service to a dog that has that capability to service them for their specific condition. During the Christmas season I would like to organize a party to help support this cause. Having this for the Christmas season seems appropriate. This is a gift of love for our disabled in the community and saving the life of man’s best friend.

I am grateful for any help in this project whether it be taking a class, visiting my office for chiropractic or acupuncture treatment, personal training or nutrition, or taking advantage of the ¨Fresh Fall Look¨ promotion. I would be grateful for any help finding a space for a reasonable price, food donations, or any doggie items you may like to give to me for the program. Again, I am not a NGO or non-for-profit I am just trying to do something good for the community on my own.
