The mission of EEESMA School for the Deaf is to ensure that all San Miguel de Allende children who are deaf become literate, independent, and productive citizens who set and achieve life goals. All funds raised at the auction will help provide education, skills training, and hope for children residing in the area who are deaf. There are no government-funded schools for the deaf in Guanajuato. EEESMA depends on donations, grants, and fundraisers like this one to keep its doors open.

The story of Laurita is a shining example of the opportunities that EEESMA is providing and the successes that the students are achieving. Laurita will graduate from Utel Online University in the next couple of months with an undergraduate degree in education. She will then join the faculty of EEESMA as a fully qualified teacher, fluent in Mexican sign language, paying it forward while at the same time being an excellent role model to the deaf children under her tutelage. Laurita joined EEESMA at primary school age and advanced through middle school and high school with flying colors. Her hard work and dedication have paid off, for herself and for everyone at the school.

Online university lectures are interpreted from Spanish to Mexican sign language by a professional interpreter, and EEESMA teachers assist Laurita with the more complicated vocabulary while tutoring her and reviewing her assignments. As they say, «It takes a village.» Laurita is living proof that being deaf need not define her. Three students now in high school hope to follow in her footsteps. We need your support to help encourage them and contribute to their success. Participating in this year’s online silent auction will go a long way to doing just that!
