Creativity: A Form of Spirituality

By Joseph Plummer

UUFSMA Board Secretary

This UUFSMA Sunday Service’s guest speaker Karen Kinney will explore the spirituality of creativity. “Creativity is not something separate from spirituality,” she says. “Creativity is a form of spirituality that has often existed outside institutionalized religion or other formal spiritual practices.”

A bestselling author, internationally exhibited artist, and teacher, Kinney’s fruitful career has taught her that creative pursuits open minds to positive change by “softening us” and “encouraging more fluid ways of being and thinking” that open the imagination to aspects of the divine.

In other words, she comments, when we understand that we are creating something deeply connected to the spiritual realm, there is a reward and freedom very different from viewing creativity through a more formulaic, rules-based, or commercial perspective. She notes that creativity and spiritualty intersect in a value system that emphasizes a creator’s own transformation. Embracing creativity as a spiritual practice inspires an entirely new meaning to life and expands one’s experience in unexpected and surprising ways.

For over 20 years, Kinney has used many creative mediums as vessels for truth and beauty. Her most recent book, “Doorways to Transformation: Everyday Wisdom for the Creative Soul,” is a manual for spiritual growth that includes meditations to bolster both one’s creative spirit and personal life. Kinney obtained a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago. A Chicago native, she made her home in California for 17 years and now divides her time between San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City.

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal faith inviting its community to gather around a set of harmonizing values and principles for living. Our UU Fellowship welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Belief in a divinity is not the central issue around which we gather for worship and generous action. Rather, we come together with a belief in community, love, compassion, social justice, and reverence for nature, all within the interconnected web of existence.

UUFSMA donates generously to support nonprofit organizations that provide health, educational, and environmental services for underserved communities in the San Miguel region. Please support this work by clicking on the website home page Donate button.
