Tres de Tres Stands Against Gender Violence

By Paola Velasco

Yndira Sandoval is the main promoter of the Tres de Tres (Three by Three) movement against gender violence in Mexico. Sandoval is a social anthropologist, activist, and member of feminist movements such as Nosotros Tenemos Otros Datos and Las Constituyentes MX.

At a press conference called by the San Miguel de Allende feminist movement Sororas y Rebeldes, held at El Nigromante Cultural Center, Sandoval presented the Tres de Tres initiative against gender violence. The premise is that any man who wants to run for office as an elected official/public servant cannot be a debtor in terms of alimony, be known to harass, or be a rapist. The same should apply to positions in schools, universities, private companies, or any other position of power and decision-making ability. The Tres de Tres platform should become a constitutional law to be used as a legal framework when necessary.

“The participation of women with feminist principles is urgent to counteract the patriarchal pact under which we have lived for so many years. Violence is brewing within institutions, and what is not prohibited is allowed. We are not going to accept a simulation; a law that transforms the lives of girls and women is urgently needed,” Sandoval said.

The personal becomes political when gender violence increases every day and there are no public policies that provide a solution. For example, a rapist with an up-to-date file could not possibly consider running as a candidate for governor. No one who violates a right can aspire to public office. Tres de Tres provides arguments for the legal framework, with guidelines that must be applied in the three areas of government: municipal, state, and federal. It is urgent that this proposal be included in the laws of every state of the Republic in order to be applied in the 2024 elections. Some of the states where the initiative has already been presented are: Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Hidalgo, Michoacán, Baja California Sur, Nuevo León, Zacatecas, and Chihuahua, but only 10 states have made the necessary modifications to be able to apply the Tres de Tres. These include Yucatán and Sonora.

Sandoval and her group of activists have appeared before the congress of every state and have presented a long list of arguments so the initiative can be included in upcoming elections. Under the #Yosítecreo and #ningunagresorenelpoder, Tres de Tres has become the public enemy of the State by raising its voice and fighting for justice for women.
