By Elisabeth Mohlmann
Award-winning documentary “Mama Irene, Healer of the Andes” is coming to Teatro Santa Ana followed by Q&A with co-director and producer Elisabeth Möhlmann.
Synopsis: 86-year-old Peruvian shaman and healer Mama Irene, whose gifts first appeared when she was only a young child, lives in the heart of the Andes. Brought to us by a filmmaker who experienced Mama Irene’s healing powers firsthand, “Healer of the Andes” opens a window into her daily life as she tends to the women and children who come to her for healing and guidance. Drawing on the indigenous knowledge of her culture and traditions in danger of being lost forever, Mama Irene compassionately treats both the emotional and physical wounds of her patients. “The beauty of the Andes and its people further enrich a film that is not only a vital document of endangered wisdom, but also a story about women’s empowerment and a testament to living harmoniously with Mother Earth,” – Sabina Barach (Woodstock Film Festival 2022).
Born in Munich, Germany, and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Elisabeth Möhlmann is a former actor and stage director and a graduate of the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York. Having been touched by Mama Irene’s healing power, Möhlmann resolved to share Mama Irene’s story. She co-directed the film with Bettina Ehrhardt, an award-winning documentary film producer and director from Berlin.
Upon its release, the film traveled the world as part of the official selection of 17 film festivals including Woodstock Film Festival; Female Eye Film Festival, Toronto, (nominated Best Documentary); Swedish International Film Festival (awarded Best Documentary); and Greenmotion Film Festival, Germany (Winner Women-Environment-Activism Award).
