How to Consolidate the North American Region
The 10th North American Leaders Summit was held in Mexico City from January 9 to 11. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with President Joe Biden of the United States and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada. The leaders of the three member countries of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC) met at a time when the geopolitical climate brings about competition for the region which currently contributes 28% of global GDP. The region’s economy is 50% larger than China and 55% larger than the European Union.
The volume of trade between Mexico, the United States, and Canada represents 6% of all traditional trade in goods between countries in the world. This amount represents about half of all that China trades with the world. According to the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), one way to take advantage of the situation is to have an agenda that allows the region to provide opportunities for nearshoring. There is great productive and commercial strength in North America particularly because of the good infrastructure of the United States and Canada. The region’s demographics and its network of trade agreements boost the potential to generate, attract, and retain talent and investment. Source: Mexico Industry, Elenne Castro.
