San Miguel PEN is thrilled to return to in-person events with renowned restaurateur and chef Gabriela Cámara celebrating the Mexican culinary legacy of Diana Kennedy. Cámara enjoyed a long friendship with the intrepid explorer and beloved presenter of Mexico’s many cuisines. She will speak in the second-floor auditorium at Bellas Artes, Hernandez Macias 75, at 6 pm on Tuesday, January 24.

Gabriela Cámara became friends with Diana Kennedy in 2001 “because I was lucky enough to have her approve of me and my cooking. She liked my restaurant, Contramar, because of the attention to detail: the flavors, the simple decoration, the way we served our food, the liveliness of the place, and the good service. Diana´s complexity and greatness were all about a life dedicated to learning and admiring the small things that made a recipe, a landscape, or a sunset special. She caught them all with the extraordinary alertness of all her senses. She was a true explorer and connoisseur of details, especially in flavors and food. As she constantly repeated, ‘the devil is in the details.’”
Restaurateur, chef, and cookbook author Gabriela Cámara grew up in the small town of Tepoztlán, Morelos, outside of Mexico City, “in an ecological house which, of course, included a vegetable garden and animals. Her 25-year culinary career began with the opening of Contramar in Mexico City in 1998. Inspired by the simply-prepared seafood commonly found on Mexico’s Pacific Coast beaches, Contramar has become a neighborhood restaurant that is beloved by locals and internationally renowned. CámaraI is also behind Entremar in Mexico City, where she recently opened Caracol de Mar, Itacate de Mar, and Expendio Durango.
