Changes in Mexican Soccer

In view of the poor results of the Mexican national team in the last two years and the problems faced by Liga MX, a restructuring of national soccer was proposed.

At a press conference at the Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF), Yon de Luisa (President of the FMF), and Mikel Arriola (President of Liga MX) presented a series of structural reforms for Mexican soccer.

The new rules dictated by the FMF for Liga MX are:

  • Eliminate playoffs.
  • Put an end to multiple ownership.
  • Decrease the number of foreign players to seven.
  • Possible return of promotion and relegation by 2024.
  • Three champions per year (Apertura, Clausura, and an economic prize to the team with the most points in the year).
  • Increase the export of Mexican players abroad.

In addition to these new changes, de Luisa announced the creation of a new National Team Committee which is made up of Amaury Vergara, Alejandro Irraragori, Emilio Azcárraga, Ernesto Tinajero, Jorge Alberto Hank, and the President of the FMF.

Let’s hope this is for the good of our Mexican soccer.
