Gorditas Flor and hot springs

In the municipality of San Miguel de Allende there are many thermal waters of all kinds. It just depends on what you’re looking for. It can be an adventure with slides and loud music to a contemplative experience in an intimate atmosphere by candlelight. Or, it can be inside a cave, with your partner floating in hot springs.

Here are some suggestions. It’s best to arrive early. This way, you can enjoy the clash of a cool morning against the thermal water at 34 degrees celsius. This is good for the body.

First, you should have some breakfast. A great option at, let’s say, eight in the morning, is in Atotonilco. If it’s the weekend there will be many options. Dozens of ladies offering gorditas, carnitas stalls and barbecue or stewed tacos. Perhaps the best gorditas are at “Flor”. Here you will find tacos, sopes and gorditas made of freshly made corn dough. There are delicious stews all week long. Some, vegetarian, such as quelites and rajas or with meat, such as potatoes with chorizo ​​or chicharrón pressed in salsa. Another option is a sope of quelites or one of potatoes with chorizo ​​sprinkled with fresh cheese and an added touch of mortajada sauce. This, accompanied with café de olla, is a perfect breakfast to start the day.

Close to here, headed in the direction of San Miguel you will see the sign of «Loma Lagartija» hot springs, a small paradise. The main “chorro” fills a large jacuzzi. The water will be very hot. Enjoy it for a maximum of one hour, and then go to the twin pools and swim a bit. The water will be warm and if you bring some exercise accessories you can use them here.

There are many pine trees, so finding some shade is easy. Or you can sunbathe. There is restaurant service or you can bring your own food. However, alcohol must be purchased on the premises. A pina colada is a great idea after spending time in the pools. Bring a good book, or, if you are with someone, a board game can be fun. From the thermal water —which is known from medicinal traditions to do a lot of good for the body—, to the garden and the trees, this will be an excellent morning.
