Along with the declaration of the historical center of San Miguel de Allende as a UNESCO World Heritage site, we have the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, also known as the Sistine Chapel of America. It is part of the World Heritage Declaration because of its beauty and historical importance. The area is always active and alive because of its natural attractions, hotels, ranches, and restaurants. This week I will leave you with recommendations for several nearby places you may not have visited for a while or are unfamiliar with.
The first place to see is the interior of the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, which is impressive with its details. No matter how often you have visited, there will be something you have not previously noticed. If you go on a weekend, take the opportunity to visit the small craft and food market located on the main street and support local businesses. The artisans and cooks have been crafting items and preparing food for hundreds of visitors for years, and they come every week. You can also find typical and regional sweet shops.
A short distance from the shops, where the road begins, is Mamma Mía Campestre, where you can have a fine meal. Do not miss the opportunity to cool off with their «Hechicera,» the craft beer prepared right there. My favorite is Pale Ale, but you can do the complete tasting and ask for Porter, IPA, or Pilsner, to mention the most classic varieties. If you need more options to eat, just off to the side is «El Coyote Flaco.» Nature surrounds» both places, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.
Just over the curve, past El Cortijo, you will see the entrance to another interesting location: Tierra y Amor. This ranch produces mesquite honey and other products. You can enjoy guided tours within the property and visit a museum dedicated to honey and bees. Large natural spaces with flowers favor pollinators, and you’ll see a beautiful land and art exhibition (art created using nature itself and recycled objects) along the route. A cafeteria and cabins are available in case you want to stay overnight in the area. Quite a surprise!
