At the Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel (The Society for the protection of Animals) known as SPA dogs group together to run and play in exercise areas. This happens 3 times a day for about 45 minutes each time. Determining which dogs should be members of each playgroup is a big decision. It hinges upon the location of each dog’s casita and the size and temperament of each dog. For about 1-1/2 days a new dog does not mix with the rest of the dogs in the group. This gives them all a chance to adapt to the smells of their new friends. The first time a group is changed by the addition of a new dog, our three workers accompany them and monitor their interaction to make sure that trouble is not brewing.
Lolita’s playgroup is comprised of Lolita, Butch, Bonnie, and Rita. When it’s their turn to have playtime in the back exercise area they, like almost all the dogs at the SPA, eagerly join the pack and race to the back. Luckily they seem to get along well together while they are in their exercise area.
Lolita and Bonnie are medium-sized. Butch is large while Rita is small/medium-sized. With the exception of Rita they are each 3 to 3-1/2 years old. Rita is 12 and has been at the SPA since she was 2-1/2 months old.
Lolita is a lovely slender dog who gets along very well with people. She sporadically reacts to other dogs on the street. In addition to playing with her friends she enjoys getting personal attention in her casita. She stares deeply into your eyes when you talk to her one-on-one. Sometimes she just stretches out and listens. Having come to us from a home she would likely adapt easily to a new family and be devoted to them.
Butch is a handsome boy who is very strong and athletic. He doesn’t shy away from new volunteers who want to take him for a walk or give him a treat when he sits but he is a little nervous about meeting people who are interested in adopting him. For such a large boy he has a soft mouth and takes treats as if they were the best possible thing in the world. He enjoys going for a walk and is willing to pull you along if you don’t keep up with him. He usually likes other dogs, is happy, enthusiastic, and sweet.
Bonnie is a loving, beautiful girl. She is playful and energetic. She is always excited about going for a walk and patiently waits for her turn by stretching out with her legs crossed in front of her until you show up with her leash. She’s a happy girl, friendly to people, and other dogs.
Rita has her moments of being friendly with strangers and new volunteers but after 12 years at the SPA she is set in her ways. It’s always great when she goes for a walk with someone new which expands her horizons. She runs out to be with her playgroup and enjoys her time with her friends.
Meet Lolita, Butch, Bonnie, and maybe Rita at the SPA any day, Monday-Saturday,11am-2pm, Los Pinos 7, 415 152 6124 (masks required).
