CONTEMPLO art space located at Viñedo Dos Búhos is happy to be opening hearts and minds with a new video exhibition by artists Daniela Edburg and Ivan Puig (and a special guest artist, Cian Puig Garibi – Ivan´s 8 year old son).
Created during a time of artistic stasis in the pandemic winter of early 2020, Ápeiron is a truly wonderful visual journey that contemplates the creation of the Universe through the eyes of two of Mexico’s most creative artists with the help of the youthful insight and narration of Puig´s son, Cian. Ivan Puig identifies as a multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker and Daniela Edburg identifies similarly with photography and textiles being her primary artistic output. Together they weave an engaging narrative full of visual textures that are informed by Edburg’s signature knitted and other fleshy textile props and color palette and Puig’s fascination with technology, both high and low.
The artist trio who, like the rest of us, were mostly isolating in their domestic spaces during the pandemic and were inspired by the books they found themselves reading, especially with Cian. In particular the book, Una espina es un bosque de advertencias, which was informed by the consejo de ancianos de la tribu yoreme de Cohuirimpo (council of elders of the Yorema tribe from Cohuirimpo), the Tao Te King and Manual para maestros que lloran por las noches (The manual for teachers who cry at night) and as well as conversations they were having around the house regarding our existence on the planet. Some interesting conversations happened amongst the three that then extended to calls with astrophysicists and other philosophers as the film idea began to percolate. To make the film they also looked to the materials in their domestic spaces and artist studios –the naturally dyed, chartreuse wool rugs that Edburg uses both in her home and in as platforms for her knitted sculpture forms the background of scenes where Cian dreams of the Universe expanding, the interior of their white speckled stove doors serves as the portal into outer space and Cian contributes the drawings of a child’s perspective of the Universe. The soundtrack is the comforting voice of a father dialoguing with his son about the origins of the Universe via the Big Bang and resonates as a fatherly embrace to us all reassuring us that we may not all agree but that we are all stardust and are all in this crazy existence together as one.
