Brazilian Music: the songs from Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Elis Regina, and more

By Antonio Lozoya

The XXVIII International Jazz and Blues Festival presents the singer Louanna, who will present a program about Brazilian Music, interpreting the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Elis Regina, Djavan, and Maria Rita, among others. The concert will take place at the Cultural Center «El Nigromante» Bellas Artes, on Hernández Macías 75, Centro, this coming Saturday, October 8, at 6pm.

Gilberto was a well-known musician who, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim (better known as Tom Jobim and for “The Girl from Ipanema”), was one of the creators of the musical genre bossa nova. After Gilberto met Tom Jobim, a pianist and composer with a classical education who also liked jazz, they launched this movement that received worldwide recognition in the late 1950s.

One of the most iconic singers of Brazilian music was Regina, who marked a milestone by recording the album “Elis & Tom” in 1974 with maestro Tom Jobim, considered one of the best bossa nova albums in history. Regina was not only a most extraordinary singer but also the discoverer, promoter—and inspiring muse—of the best music composed in Brazil for two decades. Regina continues to make history and her daughter, Maria Rita, shines with her own light and follows in her mother’s footsteps.

Louanna is a French-Brazilian singer and songwriter who loves to venture into languages (French, Portuguese, and Spanish) as each of them allows her to create new characters and experience songs with different genres such as jazz, bossa nova, Brazilian popular music, folk, dream pop, and neo-soul.

Yonatan Mazor, a pianist, graduated from the University of North Texas (UNT) with a degree in jazz studies. From 2006 to 2014, he studied classical piano with teacher Berthe Odnoposoff and took three years of jazz piano with teacher Stefan Karlsson.

Javier Stephens on drums was originally from Brazil, with musical studies at the University of Guanajuato and experience in Brazilian rhythms.

On bass is Antonio Lozoya, a graduate of the CDMX Higher School of Music, scholarship holder of the Fund for Culture and the Arts, and director of the San Miguel International Jazz and Blues Festival.
