Darbukanos Dance – Concert

By Susy Sason

Darbukanos, a live music and belly dance ensemble, is synonymous with the sound of the darbuka, flute, percussions and oud. If you haven’t yet caught one of their shows, this is your chance.

Darbukanos is made up of the dancer Fridha Chacón, the ensemble’s enthusiastic leader whose energy and passion has made it possible to bring their art to the public; Israel Chávez, the group’s musical leader (violin and drums); Rogelio Vargas (oud); Moisés Ponce (darbuka); and Salvador Huerta (flute). Some of the ensemble members live in SMA and others come from neighboring cities.

Darbukanos does not take a purist approach to Turkish or Egyptian belly dance; its main goal is to present original music and dance arrangements with a creative touch. In the most respectful way, the ensemble strives to share the spirit of belly dance, with its rhythms and typical hip and chest movements and undulations of the body, as well as the use of castanets, the veil and the saber.

These Mexican artists are excited to express their Middle Eastern soul with a music and dance performance that is a tribute to the elements of nature and to femininity, enriched by the interplay between space, balance, colors and the textures of the costumes.

Join Darbukanos at Teatro Ángela Peralta on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Covid-19 prevention protocols will be observed.
