Donizetti’s “Don Pascuale” Opera

By Signe Hammer

After the triumph of our first Donizetti comic opera in 2020, “L’Elisir D’Amore,” this season we will be presenting his hilarious and much loved “Don Pasquale,” with three performances, on February 10, 12, and 13 (Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, all at 5 pm) at the teatro Angela Peralta. The score is filled with a cornucopia of wonderful arias and the plot is a very simple one: rich elderly aristocrat duped by his doctor into marrying a beautiful young girl, Norina, who turns out to be the wife from hell! However, all’s well that ends well, and the opera finishes with Don Pasquale released from the ‘marriage’ and his “wife” marrying her true love!

We would like to thank our sponsor for this season’s opera, Coldwell Banker SMART!

We have a stellar cast of many of your favorite singers. Norina will be sung by Annabel de la Mora, who stunned audiences with her magnificent singing in “L’Elisir,” and the title role of the Don has one of Mexico’s great bass-baritones, Jesus Suaste, whom many of you will remember as an outstanding Germont in our production of “La Traviata” in 2015.

Another marvelous comic singer, Rodrigo Urrutia, bass-baritone, who brought the house down with his magnificent Leporello in our “Don Giovanni” plays the doctor.

Rodrigo Garciarroyo once more directs and Maestro Rodrigo Macias will be on the podium again.

Tickets for the opera are very limited because of capacity restrictions due to Covid and social distancing, particularly in the sought-after orchestra section and the boxes, so I recommend you book/buy tickets absolutely as soon as you can to avoid disappointment, either by replying to this email, or on line at our web site by following this link: www.promusicasma.org

Our renowned Opera Gala Fundraiser will be on the Tuesday of opera week, 5 pm on February 8, at a stunning hacienda in Los Frailes. All proceeds go to support the Pro Musica Youth Orchestra under its new charismatic conductor, Robert Mari. The orchestra will play Mozart on the patio whilst you sip Prosecco and nibble canapés. This will be followed by a candle lit, three course dinner with wine, after which the stars of the opera will sing a wide selection of songs and arias.

A wonderful way to experience our opera week at its best is to buy a VIP package, which includes an orchestra ticket and reserved seat for the opera on the date of your choice, Prosecco during an interval, attendance at the Gala and an invitation to the fun, catered, last-night cast party after Sunday’s performance. Again, only strictly limited tickets are available. These may be purchased online on our web site, www.promusicasma.org.
