El Viaje de Zazil

“El Viaje de Zazil” (Zazil´s Voyage) is a multimedia play written and directed by the artist Tomás Bürkey that will be presented at Casa Europa from November 1 to 4 within the framework of the Day of the Dead celebrations. Bürkey is known for being a multidimensional artist who expresses himself in a wide variety of media such as painting, music, installation, theater, and projection mapping. On this occasion he brings together many of those talents in an epic and immersive work.

Bürkey was the co-creator of the La Calaca Festival 10 years ago, which revolutionized  how the Dead are celebrated in San Miguel de Allende and the world with a variety of activities honoring traditions as well as bringing first rate contemporary artists and creatives. Since then, he has dedicated himself to be of service to his community every year with his internationally known Pyramid of the Dead, and in recent years, due to pandemic issues, the altar that he builds on the facade of his house/workshop in Colonia Guadalupe has quickly become a tradition. This year will not be the exception. Along with presenting “Zazil´s Voyage” with local talents such as Jenny Salas whom he collaborated with on other occasions, Bürkey also, for example, wrote «Corazón de Bosque» which was presented before the pandemic at Angela Peralta having great success and critical response.

Salas is known for her dedication to aerial dance and the circus arts, and is a great teacher with many students who have grown with her over the years. She is a native sanmiguelense woman of Chichimeca blood, so of course she is the ideal person to play the character of Zazil who undertakes a journey through the underworld.

Always with the intention of giving a platform to talented sanmiguelenses, the work also includes young artists such as Alejandra Jiménez Aguilera, Daniela Mendez Lugo, and Magdalena Yañez Carbajal. As is the sanmiguelense spirit, it has international artists such as Sasha Black who has quickly made a name for herself in this beloved town. The exceptional keyboardist Star Goes Nova, who has composed the music exclusively for this show and is visiting us especially from California, will be in charge of the soundtrack. Many will remember her for her presentation with Andrea Brooke’s Sonic Butterfly that took place in the main square within the framework of the FASMA festival where she shared the stage with Bürkey. This bilingual piece is a unique opportunity to experience an unforgettable performance with the whole family, so don’t miss it—and support our local artists scene. It takes place November 1 to 4, at 7pm at the Casa Europa in Mexico cultural center. The cost is 250 pesos for the general public. See you there!
