This winter the Compartimento Cinematografico, an independent arthouse screen in San Miguel de Allende takes us on a journey to France to enjoy a marvelous panorama of contemporary French cinema.
As climax of the program, we are honored to be able to premiere one of the most anticipated films of the year on the big screen this week: Titane, by director Julia Ducournau, winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2021. After her acclaimed debut feature Voraz, the director returns with this striking and visually extraordinary story in which, during a series of unexplained crimes that shake a city, a father is reunited with his missing son.
You can also discover the powerful Niña Hermosa (Papicha), whose story takes us to the Algeria of 1997. While the country is in the hands of terrorist groups seeking to establish a strict Islamic and retrograde state, women are the most affected by its new laws, through which the leaders seek to control their bodies. Nedjma, a young student with a passion for fashion, decides to stand up for teenage girls by holding a fashion contest that defies all established norms.
Part of the program as well is Little Girl, one of our favorite films of the year, which lovingly depicts the life of 7-year-old Sasha, who always knew she was a girl despite being born a boy. Not being treated as a girl her age by society, Sasha and her family face the daily battle to be accepted and respected.
We can certainly learn a lot from these three wonder women at the center of the French film series we are presenting this winter. We are grateful for the generous support of Unifrance for inviting us to direct our gaze towards new filmic horizons and to be able to share the best in international cinema with our enthusiastic San Miguel de Allende audiences.
Located inside Mezcal-Art restaurant on Calzada de la Estación 59 (next to Immigration offices), Compartimento Cinematográfico serves as a meeting point where locals can enjoy cinema as a shared cultural experience. We currently present a curated film program with two screenings daily from Wednesday to Saturday. In addition to providing access to Mexican cinema, we also program foreign films that do not reach commercial theaters in the region. We invite you to check our full weekly movie program including many other titles and films for kids through our social networks.
