Calling all culture vultures, art aficionados, the curious, the mystic, the mad! Clear your calendars for February 18 and 19, 2023, from 11am to 5pm. It’s that time of year when Colonia San Antonio is transformed from a quaint and quiet neighborhood into MyStudio—MiEstudio—the hottest art event of the season. Over this weekend, 46 gifted members of San Antonio’s art community will be opening their studios and sharing their impressive work.
Colonia San Antonio has always been known as a hotbed of artists. But who are these creatures of darkness and delight? Where do they create their fearful alchemy? At last, the High Priestess’s veil will be pulled back for you to see. In these venues, you will see various techniques and eclectic expressions of materials: paintings, large and small, abstract and figurative; clay works and sculpture; jewelry embracing exotic beading, recycled and unconventional metal pieces; and photography ranging from traditional to digitally transformed. You will see mixed media, hand-woven textiles, modern quilts, glass mosaics, illustration, photography collage, print-making, and drawing.
The Banner Project started in 2019 as the brainchild of Peter A. Davis continues. This year’s theme will be animals. There will be 50 new banners—25 shown at the Institute Allende Art School and 25 at the corner of San Elias and Privada de San Pablo. Cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, insects, and rodents will be featured in all their varied splendor.
A new addition facilitating maximum viewing will be two vans circulating throughout the neighborhood and chauffeuring people to the studios. For 200 pesos, you will have unlimited on/off access to transportation throughout the colonia. See the advertisement in this week’s Atención for details. There will be two maps for this event—one showing the artists’ studios and one for the van stops. Wristbands are available for purchase with cash only at the Instituto Allende Art School.
Throughout the city and in the Academic office of the Instituto Allende on Ancha de San Antonio 22, 5,000 maps will be distributed. A digital map is accessible from the QR code found in our advertisement.
