Pedro Diego and PLATZ: Two Diametrically Opposed Artists

By Fernanda Noriega

On August 13 during one of Fábrica La Aurora’s famed art walks, we had the opportunity to meet two very special artists who presented their works at the Intersección Gallery. One was a young talent from Argentina known as PLATZ and the other an artist whose talent runs through his veins: Pedro Diego Alvarado Rivera, grandson of the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. The two are diametrically opposed in their approaches.

There was an atmosphere of rejoicing and excitement in the gallery because both PLATZ and Pedro Diego presented their works for the first time in San Miguel. Visitors were curious and very interested in learning about the techniques and inspirations of the artists, who kindly explained their points of view and exchanged opinions with the spectators. Of course, we could not miss the opportunity to talk with them and ask them how they define their work.

Here we briefly present the discussion we had on that magical afternoon.

Josemiel PLATZ, who has evolved through experience both in his technique and in the message he wishes to convey through his paintings, shares that «understanding that there is a greater structure that belongs to the universe and that, thanks to it, we have possibilities on this plane. That is why I use organic materials and colors such as gold, which I relate to alchemy.» PLATZ considers himself a self-taught visual artist, and there was a detail about him that I found fascinating. «I started out taking photographs; however, there came a point when I realized that I was taking photographs in search of painting,» he says, and in that way he changed disciplines—a total success, if I may say so.

Meanwhile, in the next room the work of Pedro Diego Rivera is a moment of peace; his collection of paintings «Nature of the Imagination» is housed in the Intersection Gallery, and the opportunity to talk with Pedro, descendant of the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, could not be missed.

The painter says that for him painting scenes of nature is the most obvious thing to do, as natural as breathing. «My way of working consists of visiting the place, making a sketch, and the corresponding studies of what I want to project—work that I normally carry out in my studio, Pedro Diego Alvarado in CDMX,» he explains, and tells us that he feels very happy to be in San Miguel.

It is satisfying to appreciate the works of both artists. I would say that it is as if PLATZ generates questions but Pedro, answers and peace. The works will be on display until October at the Intersection Gallery. Take a moment to visit them.
