We are fortunate in San Miguel to have Sofía Viola come to town and perform at a live concert. She will be onstage at Mezcal Art with her guitar and her smaller, more traditional stringed instrument called a ronroco or charangón, Viola has performed professionally since she was a teenager and is well known as a singer and composer with honest performances. Her musical experimentation with the sounds and rhythms of Latin America bring to mind the late Argentinian singer, Mercedes Sosa. Viola performs with the same strong sense of conviction and warm engaging personality that Sosa displayed during her career. When Viola appears on stage with her folk instruments, she is the perfect representative of Argentinian folk traditions. But she is not afraid to venture into different genres such as the blues, tangos, or milongas. She feels that these folk traditions to the public from all of Latin America are part of her mission as a musician, and she hopes to bring them back into the mainstream.
Viola has performed at various cultural events and festivals in Latin America, the United States, and Europe. Her recordings include four independent albums and one EP, “La Huella del Cemento,” (Cement Footprint), was produced by Ezequiel Borra. Her latest release, “La de la Luna” (The One From the Moon), is an experimental album where she combines different musical genres such as bolero, ranchera, and the Mexican corrido. Audiences fall in love with Viola when she performs live. I especially love her song, “Gypsy Soul.” We will be able to enjoy her concert at Mezcal Art, on Sunday, May 14, at 3pm. Mezcal Art is located at Calzada de la Estacion 59, near the railroad station. Tickets are currently on sale at the venue.
