What is the most common disease?

By Edna de Occa

Dear Edna
What is the most common disease you find among the people who come to a session with you? Augustine L.

Dear Augustine,
This answer is based on Traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, specifically the area of acupuncture, which is endorsed by the World Health Organization and accepted as a complementary medicine.

Here I will open a parenthesis to mention the difference between alternative medicine and complementary medicine. Alternative medicine includes tools used as an alternative to allopathic (conventional) medicine, and there is no scientific basis to support it. I’m not saying if it works or not, simply there isn’t enough scientific evidence or there’s a lack of scientific endorsement to verify its effectiveness or to verify that what they say they solve is true.

The World Health Organization has accepted acupuncture as complementary medicine because it complements allopathic medicine and can be used in conjunction with allopathic medicine to treat various diseases. There are studies and scientific evidence corroborating the effectiveness of acupuncture. In Mexico, we have renowned scientists, such as the PHD Neurologist and Acupuncturist Salvador Quiroz, dedicated to scientific research and the effectiveness of acupuncture protocols. And being the neuropsychologist and acupuncturist that I am, it’s very enriching to learn from him and follow his advances and findings.

Closing the parenthesis, when evaluating the people who come to me for help, I find the vast majority have liver blockage. According to Traditional Chinese medicine and its relationship with the five elements, the liver meridian and the gallbladder meridian correspond to the wood element. The emotions that correspond to this element are anger or rage and the emotion of unfairness or feeling victimized.

To have a healthy liver, it’s important that we healthily manage our hepatic emotions so they don’t end up somatizing in our body. That is, the emotions that were not expressed and later repressed end up manifesting in the body as neck pain, digestive problems, metabolic problems, or even a broken bone.

To have a healthy liver, it’s important to be aware that alcohol and drugs intoxicate our liver system. The more alcohol and drugs you use, the more toxins your liver has and the more likely it is to have liver disease, starting with systemic inflammation, the famous metabolic syndrome, and ending with neurodegenerative diseases.

It’s important we realize that what we do, what we do not do, what we consume and drink affect our entire body system. Health is personal responsibility. You will have a quality of life corresponding to the self-love and care that you provide yourself.

A liver detox for two or seven days is not the solution if you are sick. I must tell you that you stop doing many things to be healthy since you have done many others to lead your body to become saturated and sick.
