How a Yoga Practice Helps You Become More Centered

By Tanya Kawan

As a certified yoga teacher, and having worked with various techniques, my goal is to help my students understand how practicing yoga can help them live more centered and focused lives. Here are some ways I can explain this concept to you:

1. Mind-body connection: One of the basic principles of yoga is the connection between the mind and the body. Through the practice of yoga, we learn to become more aware of our physical sensations and mental states. By bringing our attention to our breathing, our movements, and the sensations in our body, we can learn to be more present and focused in the moment.

2. Breath control: In yoga, we focus on breath control (pranayama), which helps calm the mind and reduce stress. By practicing breathing exercises, we can learn to slow down our thoughts and focus our attention. This is of great help to experience the connection with Mother Earth.

3. Meditation in motion: The physical practice of yoga, through postures called asanas, is a form of meditation in motion that seeks to help us calm the mind and focus on the present moment. As we move through each pose, we can connect with our breath and the sensations in our body, which will give us a greater sense of presence in our center, in the moment.

4. Stillness: Many yoga classes end with a period of stillness and relaxation known as svanasana, or meditation. During this time, we can allow ourselves complete relaxation, thus letting go of stress or tension. We will certainly feel more centered and focused when we return to our daily lives.
