Celebrating Wine in Interesting Times at Viñedo Dos Búhos

By Melanie Harris

Community, food and wine are the best medicine for all that ails us! At Viñedo Dos Búhos we are ready to reconnect with our community and we’ll supply it all! Our fields are bursting with grapes and we’re bursting with energy to celebrate. Plus, we won a medal! Ahem, please forgive my boasting.

Sure, it was a real honor to be named “La Mejor Bodega de Guanajuato” by Guia de Vinos Mexicanos in 2019, but as a small family winery that started in a garage 17 years ago, the winemaker has really hit her stride and she is getting noticed. As the host of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles during fall 2021 it was not only an honor to be chosen, because of our dedication to sustainable practices, (one of only two vineyards in Mexico certified organic by Oregon Tilth) to host their international judges, but to win a silver medal on our Cabernet Sauvignon was a coup. Some of our other wines won high scores: 92 points on Selección Especial 2017, 91 points on the Tempranillo 2017 and Sauvignon Blanc 2020, and 93 points on our Aglianico 2015. And we’re highlighted in Food & Wine Magazine en Espãnol again! As a family-owned winery with zero marketing budget, this kind of honest, organically created recognition of our hard work is invaluable.

Oh, and we’re opening a restaurant with Chef Emiliano Ayala! (I promise to stop visually screaming soon.) This collaboration with Chef Emiliano, creator of the “muerte lenta” taco will bring a new level of excitement to our collective tongues! We can’t give away any other details yet but for anyone who wants an advance taste, buy your tickets now for our Noche de la Vendimia on August 13, from 5-10pm.

Dance on our new 300,000-liter rainwater catchment cistern! The best part about surviving a pandemic is realizing that life is short and there is no time to sit on the sidelines. This year the emphasis of the Vendimia will be an elaborate family-style, chef-prepared feast, our delicious wine, and some serious move-your-body rhythms with Gabriel Hernandez and Cuban music!

There’s more surprises! Contemplamos is a family artist residency that takes place at Viñedo Dos Búhos in August. Artists Yuliya Lanina (Ukrainian-Russian born/USA), Julia Barbosa Landois (USA), and Mauricio Cervantes (OAX) will bring their families and create new artwork. A big reveal of their video and land art projects will happen at the end of the Vendimia party.

Now is the moment to support everything we work hard to preserve that is local and sustainable during our annual Vendimia. For those who have been lucky enough to celebrate with us previously, you know that small, intimate and quality events are what we value and the fact that we are inviting you to our 150-person event is only because without our community life just isn’t as fun. This Vendimia is for you!
