Feeding Our Canines

By Megan Gabel

Mealtime is a huge event for the S.P.A. dogs. When it’s approaching, excitement is in the air in anticipation, with scattered barking and some pacing. Usually, the dogs are fed around 1:30pm. We have treats set aside for them which we give out just before 1:30pm, sort of as an appetizer. Very generous S.P.A. supporters have, for years, donated hardboiled eggs, turkey slices, cooked liver, and cheese as special treats for our dogs. We have biscuits too. The dogs are limited to one treat per day of modest portion. We don’t want to spoil their appetites! Timing is important.

Some of the dogs know the routine well and sense when it is almost time for a treat or to be fed. Those are the dogs we can’t take for a walk after about 1pm. Among them are Sammy, Frankie, Smoky, Miny, Tigre, and John and they have the routines down pat. They’d rather miss the walk and wait until the treat giver reaches their casitas or the food is almost ready to be scooped into their bowls, later taking advantage of the opportunity to venture outside. We keep that in mind and try to arrange to walk those dogs well before 1pm.

The Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende is a no-kill shelter providing a haven for homeless, abandoned, and stray dogs and cats. We have one major fundraiser a year: our S.P.A. Pet Food Money Bank. The goal of this year’s fundraiser is $250,000 pesos ($14,000 USD), 100% of which will be applied to the annual cost of feeding our animals. Because animals do not adjust well to changes in diet and we lack sufficient storage space, we raise money to cover the annual cost of feeding our cats and dogs, rather than seeking donations of food.
