Food for Body and Soul

By Joseph Plummer

During this UUFSMA Sunday Service, Guest Minister Reverend Louise Green will speak about her new children’s story, “Emilio’s Very Bright Idea,” and highlight No Child Goes Hungry (NCGH), the national campaign to end childhood hunger in the United States, which her book benefits. She will discuss the creation of the book and its use by congregations, schools, libraries, and towns. NCGH is a Unitarian Universalist entrepreneurial ministry. It offers grants for food projects in 33 states. Information about the project can be found at www.nochildgoeshungry.net.

In the story, Emilio’s spark of imagination ignites a new project to benefit the greater good. A youngster troubled by a presentation on food scarcity at school, Emilio ponders a response and involves friends and his community with his very bright idea. They join together, build a Little Free Pantry, and provide food for a school celebration. Emilio’s Abuelita Corazón, who lives in San Miguel de Allende, teaches him, «La Comida es Amor!» He wants other children to know that special feeling, too.

The service will also highlight the work of Feed the Hungry San Miguel, which addresses childhood hunger in this city. Through school kitchens in 36 poor communities, Feed the Hungry provides more than 4,000 hot, well-balanced meals every school day. In addition, the project delivers food to hundreds of orphans and children with disabilities. UUFSMA has offered grants to this nonprofit organization in the past. Rev. Louise Green is Minister of Congregational Care at All Souls Unitarian in Washington D.C. and a spiritual director, children’s book author, and teacher of yoga and meditation. Several decades of work as a community organizer in New York City and metropolitan D.C. inform her ministry and support for liberation movements. Raised on the border in El Paso, Texas, she has a lifelong appreciation of Mexico and always enjoys visiting San Miguel and the UU Fellowship.

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal faith inviting its community to gather around a set of harmonizing values and principles for living. Our UU Fellowship welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Belief in a divinity is not the central issue around which we gather for worship and generous action. Rather, we come together with a belief in community, love, compassion, social justice, reverence for nature, and the spirituality of music, all within the interconnected web of existence.

UUFSMA donates generously to support nonprofit organizations that provide health, educational, and environmental services for underserved communities in the San Miguel region. Please support this work by clicking on the website home page Donate button.
