Medical Coverage in Mexico

By Angela Joy

Mexico is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and, of course, its delicious food. But what can you do about healthcare? As an expat, it’s essential to know your options when it comes to healthcare in Mexico. Don’t worry though because we’ve got you covered (pun intended).

One of the best things about healthcare in Mexico is that it’s affordable. So, even if you have to visit the doctor for a little too much salsa-induced heartburn, you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank. Plus, with all the delicious Mexican food available, who can blame you for overindulging?

But what do you do about language barriers? Don’t worry as you don’t need to be fluent in Spanish to navigate the healthcare system in Mexico. Just remember, «mi corazón duele» means «my heart hurts,» and «mi estómago duele» means «my stomach hurts.» And if all else fails, just do the classic pointing and gesturing routine. Who knows, you might even make a new friend in the waiting room.

Now, we all know that accidents happen. Maybe you slip on a banana peel (do they even have those in Mexico?) or stub your toe while trying to impress your new Mexican amigos with your salsa moves. Whatever the case may be, it’s always a good idea to have insurance coverage. With the right insurance plan, you’ll be covered for everything from broken bones to banana peel-related injuries.

But what if you need to be evacuated? Don’t worry because it’s not as scary as it sounds. Evacuation coverage means that if you need to be transported to a different medical facility, you’ll be covered. It’s like having your own private jet, only with less legroom.

We know it might be tempting to just stroll into a Mexican pharmacy and buy whatever medication catches your eye, but trust us, it’s always better to consult with a doctor first. Sure, some pharmacies might sell drugs without a prescription, but who knows what you’re getting yourself into? And just because something is legal in your home country doesn’t mean it’s legal in Mexico, and you don’t want to end up accidentally breaking the law. So do yourself a favor and play it safe—consult with a doctor before popping any mysterious pills you find lying around.

Your body will thank you for it later!

Healthcare in Mexico can be a great option for expats. With its affordable prices and high-quality care, it’s no wonder why so many expats choose to make Mexico their home away from home. So, go ahead and indulge in all the delicious food and exciting adventures that Mexico has to offer; just don’t forget to pack your insurance card.
