Remember March 2020? Who doesn’t? Covid arrived in San Miguel de Allende, businesses were closing, and many people lost their jobs and even hope of feeding their families.
Thank goodness Myrna Montes was there for everybody! In the midst of everyone’s fear and confusion, she recruited a group of women to collect basic pantry items to deliver to people who would lose their jobs in downtown San Miguel. In addition to some friends who quickly answered the call, Guadalupe Álvarez, President of Penzi Weddings, loaned her warehouse facility and volunteers from Amigos al 100 along with hundreds of donors packed supplies for those in need. With up to 19 hours per day of backbreaking work, the group achieved the goal that no person would be left without food during that difficult season.
The groups are currently supporting various causes for the inhabitants of the municipality, including training and emergency support for unforeseen situations, links with other associations and institutions, reading, and reforestation projects, among others.
Montes and her family arrived in San Miguel over four years ago, and as a family, together with some friends, collaborated to bring clothes, toys, accessories, and pantry items to the communities, as well as prepared food for the relatives of hospitalized patients.
Montes says, “About me, I love nature, participating with the community where I live, I fervently believe in making a change in society, through small actions that involve the largest number of people. My family is my main engine in life–we have been through very hard things, even so, we have overcome every challenge that has come our way, together and always looking forward. I love to spread a spirit of empathy and active participation for the good of the community, I believe that much is needed for children and adolescents in San Miguel and I would like to join forces so that they want to live here, fall in love with this place by encouraging activities that allow enjoyment of their surroundings.”
Join us this Tuesday, April 5, at 9:30a.m. to welcome Montes and congratulate her on receiving the Farley W. Wheelwright Citizen of the Year award.
