Fifth in a series: Shared experiences from new 2021 Jóvenes Adelante students. Some text slightly edited.
Like so many of our students, the last few months for “V” have been marked by the joys of returning to school and the hardship and heart ache of Covid.
“A real great positive experience for my life – a return to face-to-face classes after 2 years ago – I return now as a student at the level to prepare and give everything for the profession.
One of my most important achievements is to be in this law career that I longed for, and with so much desire to go forward, graduate and practice as a professional is one of my greatest purposes I have in my life…Every day I am closer to achieving it, because I have already started. Now I have to stand firm.
This new stage gives me the opportunity to learn many new things I had no idea of, meet great colleagues and professors. Two months in, I have done quite well – better than I imagined…The affinity I have shown for this career (reflected in my notes,) putting in my best effort, even if I have to [let go of] other things – the law career has taught me more than promised in this short time.
I have a good job with a person who understands me, supports me as a student. With a very hard-working family and always with a positive posture that rises with desire for a better future for us.”
But Covid has not spared this family.
“We went through a tough months recently, as my dad, sister and grandmother caught COVID 19…My grandmother died because of this pandemic that hits us, leaving my family with emotional pain, and at the same time with a couple of economic problems. I stopped working for a few weeks.
My father has now returned to his job, and little by little our economic situation is improving. Luckily with the support of Jóvenes Adelante and a job that I have, we are living without complications of the payment of my studies, and in turn the studies of my sister.
Thank you from the heart to the whole team of Jóvenes Adelante, for the great support and for managing to be part of you.”
The perseverance needed to succeed in this environment is a testament to both our students and the support Jóvenes Adelante provides. It is why 85% of our students make it, and why more and more, they return to support others as mentors and tutors. Hundreds of students will apply for 2022. Sponsors are already making commitments. You too can be a part of these stories transforming local students and their families and communities. As we reach year end and the holidays, please consider a student’s future and the gift of a sponsorship fo higher education – a gift that impacts a lifetime.
