S.P.A. Playmates

By Megan Gabel

S.P.A. dogs run and play together in groups in exercise areas at the S.P.A. This happens three times a day for about 45 minutes each time. Determining which dogs should be members of each playgroup is a big decision. It hinges upon the location of each dog’s casita and the size and temperament of each dog. For the first day or two a new dog does not mix with the rest of the dogs in the group. This gives them all a chance to adapt to the smells of their new friends. The first time a group is changed by the addition of a new dog, our three workers accompany them and monitor their interaction to make sure that trouble is not brewing.

Tessie’s playgroup is comprised of Tessie, Frankie, Annie, Blondie, Clara, and Sammy. Most are small/medium-sized and each has a different personality. They range in age from a year old (Sammy) to about 10 (Tessie). When it’s their turn to play, they, like almost all the dogs at the S.P.A., eagerly join the pack. Luckily, they seem to get along well together while they are in their dog exercise area.

Blondie is the latest addition to this group. She is about 3-1/2 years old and is a sweet, gentle, playful dog. As evidenced by her instant attachment to us, we feel certain she will be a loyal and devoted pet, likely a Velcro honey bun. She craves attention and lets you know that she would like to be with you.

About 1-1/2 years old, Clara is a small/medium-sized beauty, friendly and sweet. She likes to go for a walk on a leash. She’s easy and doesn’t pull. She’ll happily sit on the curb with you so she can soak in some love.

Sammy was recently added to Tessie’s group. Small/medium-sized, but still growing, Sammy is full of spunk and energy. He is eager to go for a walk and enjoys playing and getting attention. According to our team, when he first went out with his new group he kept trying to engage Clara in play. He apparently was annoying her, which she didn’t hesitate to let him know. We gradually integrated Sammy into the group and now he and Clara and the rest get along just fine.
