The Big/Little Entrepreneurs of San Miguel: Juana Rivera, Hair Stylist

By Carolina de la Cajiga

On Calle de Animas 24 in Centro, there is a beauty salon decorated in a minimalist style in shades of white with an elegant metal logo. It shows the natural ability of Juana Rivera’s, the owner, to create beauty by transforming the commonplace into a refined and welcoming space. From a very young age, Juana, was interested in the world of beauty. She studied styling and makeup eight years ago and, to this day, continues upgrading her skills in Querétaro and Mexico City. What attracts her the most is bridal and artistic makeup for Day of the Dead Catrinas

The services she offers are extensive: cut, hairstyling, color, keratin treatments, hair Botox to repair broken strands, eyebrow ironing, and permanent eyelash curling. She also does “micro-blading,” a delicate and innovative semi-permanent tattoo technique to design perfect, natural-looking eyebrows and eliminate the need to apply eyebrow makeup. Her passion is bridal makeup and colorimetry, a complex science to determine which warm and cool hues work best with different hair types and skin tones. Juana’s clientele is varied; it includes women and men who want more than just a plain cut, avant-garde young people who fancy the latest styles, and even little ones whose parents want them to look fashionable.

Her establishment is open from 10:30a.m. to 6:00p.m., Monday through Saturday. She is on Facebook and Instagram under the name Stilo Studio by Juana Rivera. It is best to make an appointment at 415 566 1546 to have Juana’s complete attention.

When the client arrives, Juana finds out what they have in mind and offers options. This is important to avoid confusion and disappointment, ensuring that she provides the best options so that customers leave satisfied and will return.

Like the vast majority of women, Juana balances her life between her work inside and outside the home. Besides being a wife, she is the mother of an energetic three-year-old boy. When he was younger, the grandmothers and the nanny were essential. Now he goes to kindergarten, and this gives her some time to jog or spin to stay fit and healthy. At closing time, Juana goes home to cook and prepare what Alex, her son, will need the next day, plus a multitude of planned and unplanned activities that occur most days.

Juana’s dream is to have a larger salon and a professional team that shares her passion to provide the best service to their clients.
