Throughout its history, women have played a major role in the work of Unitarian Universalism. And the Unitarian Universalist movement has played a major role in the advancement of women’s rights, spurring its momentum from the early campaigns for women’s suffrage to today’s mobilization of political support for reproductive rights, which today face so many ominous threats. Universalists were the first denomination to ordain a woman as minister of a church 150 years ago. Today more women than men are Unitarian Universalist clergy, and the current president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, The Reverend Dr. Susan Frederick-Gray, is a woman.
This UUFSMA Sunday Service celebrates Mother’s Day, and UUFSMA Minister Tom Rosiello and fellowship member Marjorie Burren will highlight women who have helped to shape Unitarian Universalism with their words and deeds. During the service, a mystery guest from the past will also pay a visit. While honoring women who have inspired and guided Unitarian Universalism, the service will also remember the singular women who have filled the role of a mother for each of us.
Leading this Sunday’s musical program, pianist Malcolm Halliday will lead the attendees in singing the hymns of women who have contributed to the songbook of Unitarian Universalism. He will also perform arrangements for piano composed by women.
Join this service and enjoy a celebration of women who shape our faith tradition, nurture every new generation, and fight for a world that empowers the rights of everyone.
