Unconditional Love: A Mother’s Day Reflection

By Ann Kuffner

Motherhood… It is exhausting… inspiring… soul-sucking… and purpose-giving. Motherhood makes you question everything while also feeling like you should know it all. Motherhood is a paradox of unconditional love punctuated with anguish. On May 14 the UUFSMA service will be a reflection of Mother’s Day. The sermon will shine a spotlight on the compassion and empathy which define motherhood but are also the major components of any nourishing relationship. The speakers will share stories of mothering. Some stories will be their own. Others will focus on profound connections with people who embody the traits of motherhood.

Reverence and respect for human nature is at the core of Unitarian Universalist tradition. This service will show that the impetus to show compassion, even in the face of human frailty, is the most motherly instinct of all. It will be a feel-good service of laughter and tears to highlight the many ways that one can experience nourishing bonds and develop deep caring for the other people in our lives.

Several other UU members will join Carla to share their experiences.

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal faith inviting its community to gather around a set of harmonizing values and principles for living. Our UU Fellowship welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Belief in a divinity is not the central issue around which we gather for worship and generous action. Rather, we come together with a belief in community, love, compassion, social justice, reverence for nature, and the spirituality of music, all within the interconnected web of existence.

UUFSMA donates generously to support nonprofit organizations that provide health, educational, and environmental services for underserved communities in the San Miguel region. Please support this work by clicking on the website home page Donate button.
