Webinar: “All Rights for All the People All the Time”

By Joseph Plummer

This first week of March begins International Women’s Month and this weekend’s UUFSMA Guest Speaker Veronica Cruz will discuss “All Rights for All the People All the Time” for a combined audience of Ser Mujer and the UUFSMA.

The first Mexican human rights activist to be honored as a Defender of Human Rights by Human Rights Watch, Sanchez gained that recognition in 2006 for her work to establish women’s rights to legal and medical services. She is also the founder of Las Libres, based in Guanajuato, which has gained an international reputation as a defender of women’s rights against domestic and public violence, while using the law to build support for gender equality and safe and legal abortion.

Las Libres’ work results in life-changing benefits for predominantly uneducated, indigenous, and impoverished Mexican women, many of whom have been imprisoned for abortions and miscarriages. Through her mobilization of public opinion and legal resources, Cruz has led the effort to decriminalize and de-stigmatize women’s health and reproductive care. One of Las Libres’ notable achievements came through  its leadership in gaining the safe harbor of legal abortion in Mexico.

Ser Mujer is a coalition of Mexican, American, Canadian, and Mexican American women of all ages. For seven years Ser Mujer has presented events, programs, and workshops to promote women’s issues across cultures while raising awareness of women’s accomplishments.

Red Dress Day will highlight the celebration of International Women’s Month in San Miguel. Designed as a remembrance of missing and murdered indigenous women in Mexico, where an average of five women go missing each day, the project will feature more than 100 red dresses displayed in several locations throughout San Miguel.
