Workshop: Navigating Transitions

By Marneen Preza

A workshop designed to reframe aging and evolve toward a more enjoyable and meaningful life.

In a time when one’s longevity has increased by up to thirty years over the last century, our attitudes toward aging have moved in the opposite direction and not kept pace with our biological longevity. We are now collectively navigating a longer midlife stretch (which many sociologists now say stretches from ages 35-75), and we are seeking novel ways to push through the societal disconnect of ageist attitudes that elicit a kind of cognitive dissonance. We are feeling one way internally–vibrant, capable, and confident–but our external social environment is trying to convince us that we ought not to be feeling such self-efficacy.

How do we work on sharpening our capacity for transitions in later life? We first need to recognize that we may have absorbed cultural conditioning that says life becomes boring, dull and irrelevant at the halfway mark and beyond. We need to find effective ways to shed ourselves of this detrimental message.

“Navigating Transitions» is a One Day Workshop created and facilitated by Chip Conley, to be held August 27th at Ilo Rojo Hotel Boutique, here in San Miguel de Allende. New York Times bestselling author, and acclaimed Ted Talk’s speaker, Conley is the disruptive hospitality entrepreneur and maverick that helped Airbnb’s founders turn their fast-growing tech start-up into a global hospitality brand.  In his book “Wisdom @ Work: The Making of a Modern Elder », he shares his unexpected journey at midlife—from CEO to intern in his 50s.

Conley founded “Joie de Vivre Hospitality” as a rebel and innovative entrepreneur at age 26. After selling this business, he wasn’t sure what his next challenge would be. Although he could have retired at age 52, the young founders of Airbnb asked him to serve as head of Global Hospitality & Strategy, while simultaneously serving as CEO Brian Chesky’s mentor, and Conley continues today as a Strategic Advisor to the company’s leadership.

He also serves on the board of Encore.org, a non-profit organization that brings together both old and young changemakers to solve problems, bridge divides, and co-create the future. Conley also participates in the advisory board for the Stanford Center for Longevity.

While writing his book “Wisdom @ Work”, a manifesto on ageism, Conley was inspired to found the world’s first midlife wisdom school, the Modern Elder Academy (MEA), where a new roadmap for midlife is offered at a beautiful oceanfront campus in Baja California Sur, Mexico. More than 2,200 alumni from 35 countries have studied this unique beachfront campus.

MEA is on a mission to reframe one’s midlife from a crisis to a calling while helping those individuals find a renewed sense of purpose.

You now are given an extraordinary opportunity here in San Miguel de Allende, to experience an enriching workshop created by MEA, with a focus on how to reframe aging and shift the mindset about the transitions that happen in the second half of life.  Registration is open and space is limited. Don’t miss it!
