Casa Arum, time-travel architecture

By Jesús Aguado

The new hotel in town is Casa Arum, on the corner of Salida a Queretaro and Callejón del Chorro. It’s a space that invites one to step through time. Silvia Díaz de Gutiérrez, a businesswoman from Moroleón always said, “I want something in San Miguel.” She envisioned retiring here and she invited friends and relatives to invest in San Miguel. Now she has not only a house, but she also built her new hotel.

During the opening, Silvia Díaz spoke with Atencion and explained how each room in the hotel is different, but is designed for relaxation. “I chose the ‘flavor’. Everything is refined, with the thought that I could use it myself. We have eight rooms. Each one is contemporary, has art, and its own flavor.”

The architect in charge of designing the space, Emilio Lara, explained during a tour that the style is contemporary eclectic. He mentioned that during the Porfiriato period, French architecture arrived and the style adapted “to ranchero, indigenous Mexico. The Mexico that existed was of the country, of horses.”

“Here the ground floor is a contemporary industrial concept adapted to 2020. The first floor is a mingling of 2020 interior design, with touches of the 1920s. You pass from a living room or hallway in the same style, but a century apart. You do not perceive that you travel in time because you are in the same space, and that means there is no break in the style.”

Regarding the rooms, he explained that the architecture is commercial, with areas for relaxation and rest, but they consistently interact with the life of San Miguel. An example is the fifth façade, or terrace. This is where guests at the opening of Casa Arum enjoyed music with a DJ, red and white wines, and sandwiches prepared by the San Miguel staff working there.
