Creative drinks and food at Carajillo

By Fernanda Noriega

A recently opened venue on Calle Umarán, in the center of San Miguel de Allende, is well worth a visit. It could quickly become one of your favorite spots for an enjoyable time and for sampling delicious and unusual drinks.

Last August, Carajillo arrived in SMA. Benefiting from the experience of three branches in Mexico City and León, Carajillo is delighting SMA with classic and signature cocktails, and eclectic gastronomic offerings.

Vikingo Valderrama, the creative force behind the Carajillo team, designs signature cocktails in an especially creative way. They are visually appealing and use elements and ingredients that add a touch of originality to each one. For instance, the Margarita Volcánica, is salted with tortilla ash, while the Isabel contains St. Germain Elderflower liqueur and vodka. Other cocktails are only available on special occasions: Carajillo Baileys on Mother’s Day; and the Carajillo Conejito to celebrate the Easter season.

At the most recent Oktoberfest in Mexico City Carajillo presented a dish consisting of a turkey leg cooked in a dark beer-infused BBQ sauce, accompanied by a carajillo draft beer. Currently on the menu at Carajillo are dishes such as the Tapatio Beef Filet, flamed with tequila.

As you can see, the soul of Carajillo is not only signature cocktails that are a feast for the eyes and palate, but also spirits that season the food in a unique way. Chef Juan Arroyo and Mixologist Valderrama have worked together to create a different and surprising menu that blends and complements the flavors of the food and drinks.
