Announcement of Changes in Appliances with 5G Technology

By Elenne Castro

Home appliance and mobile connectivity will be closer than ever with the arrival of the 5G signal. This new form of connectivity will provide coverage to some 32 million mobile devices in Mexico by 2023, according to the company Ericsson. That number is expected to grow exponentially throughout this decade. The first 5G connections in Mexico were established at the end of 2021, and by the end of 2022, it is estimated to reach 10% of the devices in the country. “As well as being disruptive in many aspects, 5G will also play an important role in involving more and more home appliances through the Internet of Things, which is good news for the comfort and functioning of the home, but also for aspects such as sustainability and family spending,” predicted Yoelle Rojas, general director of the Household Appliances Cluster (CLELAC).

As 5G technology is promoted, it increases the production of smart appliances, an industry sector that today reaches a value of US$34.8 billion. This industry is expected to maintain a growth of 16.6% for the rest of the decade, according to estimates by the consultancy firm P&S Intelligence. According to CLELAC, which integrates more than 80 companies and educational institutions, 5G technology will impact household appliances and the way in which people engage with them in the following ways:

Remote control: With the 5G network and smart appliances, it will be possible to carry out any household task, even if people are not there. Given the extensive data transfer capacity of the 5G network, which makes it possible to connect quickly, appliances can be programmed remotely from a smartphone, maintaining a permanent connection with the home.

Efficient energy consumption: There is a possibility of communication between all the smart home appliances. That opens the door to more intelligent energy consumption, as people can monitor how much electricity they use and prioritize the most necessary tasks at the moment.

Less maintenance losses: These new technologies will allow household appliances to send information to mobile phones about their own operation and to report failure in real time. As an example, this would prevent food waste in the case that a refrigerator fails, because the issue could be dealt immediately. The same could be said for other appliances like washing machines, which could also be identified as not functioning properly.

Implementation of a secure network: There is currently a debate about the security that 5G technology can offer users. Certain options are already being developed to allow for encrypted connection and the use of only those devices compatible with the security in the home. The goal is for everyone to have their own personalized device network in their home, with the highest security standards.
