The Sindicato was headquarters of the most important local union in the 20th century. It was the Union of Workers of the Textile Factory «La Aurora,» and it operated for years as a social, cultural, and recreational center for the working families of San Miguel de Allende.
In 1995 when the factory finally closed for good, the property was rescued by the independent association El Recreo de San, A.C. in order to make it a community center that would provide space for cultural, educational, sports, and social activities. It has continued as a cultural community project, remained independent for 27 years, and has provided these services without interruption to the residents of San Miguel. For some, “It is the tribal bonfire,” as José Luis Mendoza says, “because people gather around it.” It can also be considered a cultural oasis in a city that seems more focused on tourism than on offering cultural spaces to its citizens—especially children and young people. It is a great example of the citizen involvement that distinguishes San Miguel
Currently, the direction of the cultural center is managed by Cristina Solis and is focused on offering activities on a regular basis at very affordable prices. Recently, the Community Cultural Center obtained support from the Federal Ministry of Culture called «reactivation of independent scenic spaces.» During the second part of 2021 they received various theatrical groups from different states of the country.
Community work is also something that has been taken up by the Sindicato. In December, 2021 they had the opportunity to house 110 Haitian migrants offering them lodging and food during the time their visitor visas in Mexico were being processed. Sites like El Sindicato preserve the identity and vocation of the places where they are. Art and social service are pillars of a healthy, organized, and creative society. We are always seeking to build bridges within the diverse population of San Miguel de Allende.
