Take note, there is a new bar in San Miguel de Allende that you have to visit. The legendary Tunki Bar from CDMX has opened a new location at the Casa de Sierra Nevada in San Miguel. Tunki is recognized as one of the best bars in the world. With the opening of their new Tunki Rooftop, the famous customized cocktail recipes from Mexico City have now arrived in San Miguel de Allende. The rooftop bar offers innovative creations, and authentic Peruvian cuisine on its restaurant menu. It also offers unparalleled views of one of the most emblematic cities in the world.
The owners chose to name the Tunki to honor the official bird of Peru, and they offer Peruvian cuisine to boot. The menu melds several Peruvian culinary cultures and geographic regions: the Pacific Coast, the Tropical Jungle, and the Altiplano regions of Peru. Each has its own distinct personality, and flavors that combine to create an incomparable dining experience. The menu is also a tribute to the Mexican bar community of the resistance era. The Handshake Speakeasy has always catered to innovative cocktails served in an extraordinary and intimate atmosphere. In the same way, the Tunki bar puts its own spin on crowd favorite cocktails. Adding brown butter mushrooms to an Old Fashioned is not out of bounds, nor is incorporating mole and sesame seeds into a Michter’s Manhattan. Tunki Rooftop takes clients on a gastronomic adventure, offering cocktails that will delight the senses and match perfectly with the vibrant flavors of Peru.
Among the highlights are the “Tunki Spritz,” with Aperol, coconut, Prosecco and soda. Another is “Cariño,” a fresh and creamy aperitif, with Bacardi 8 rum, yellow Chartreuse, vanilla, lemon and Greek yogurt. Customers can also choose from a selection of herbal teas. There is the bittersweet “Fig Americano,” made with Di Battista Bitter, Cinzano Rosso, fig leaf, and soda. There is also the “Flowerbomb” that offers customers a fresh alternative with Ocho Blanco tequila, Saint Germain, orange blossom and tonic.
The kitchen prepares all the food with locally sourced products. You can find small tapas designed to be shared, from Ceviche Carretillero and Trout Tiradito in Ají Amarillo Sauce, to Charapa Chaufa with Glazed Pork Ribs and Panchamanca Chicken. Diners can conclude their meal with a sweet ending, choosing among delicious desserts such as Ponderación with Lucuma Ice Cream, Suspiro with hints of Pisco, and Mazamorra Brulee.
Design
As for the setting, the design of the rooftop lounge is inspired by the color palette that distinguishes San Miguel de Allende. From the pink limestone facade of the Parroquia, to the golden light of sunset and rust colored tones on the terracotta tiles of the roofs. Each piece of furniture has been purchased from local artisans in San Miguel de Allende, and Guadalajara, providing an authentic Mexican experience. The dark-stained bar features wood carved by local artisans, with rich blackened details that make an instant impression. There is a gorgeous, hand-painted tile backsplash in custom colors. Aztec Red stone countertops, glass and iron pendants, and camel-colored saddle leather stools complete the decor. The wrought iron and Torreana stone tables, and the sumptuous wooden sun loungers with warm terracotta tones, invite guests to sit back and relax against the dazzling backdrop of lush vegetation and incomparable views of the city. Tunki is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 1pm to 9pm. For reservations and more information: tunki.handshake@belmond.com or by phone 52 415 152 7040.
