«Many times, in the face of an ailment, a compensation mechanism is put in place that makes the individual respond creatively.» Oliver Sack
When we are born, we immediately have an instrument that will be very useful to measure the vibrations and energies of the environment where we are—some 90 percent of the physiological changes are manifested and the sensations are experienced. I speak of the body, an armor useful to protect us, or a shell attached to the bones that weighs us down walking and limits our own life.
This body dimension is a thermometer or compass that tells us the right direction to make decisions. That instrument—which is ourselves—allows us to live here and now, connecting deeply with who we are, sentient beings.
One of the great paradoxes that I have been able to witness in my office is to discover how that bodily reality is so profoundly significant. It can become a suffering and deeply assimilated dimension. This is thanks to the construction of social patterns that, in perspective, the only thing they contribute is the defragmentation of a personal image, which simply becomes the frustrating search for a utopian ideal. This happens in general because we live disconnected from ourselves and stop feeling in our body the true reality of who we are. I have consulted with many people who struggle with the experience of being overweight. The only thing they have unconsciously or consciously sought is to hide their true reality, by placing a barrier to avoid contact with others, such as clothes that conceal the shape of the body.
I have met many young people who sculpt a physically harmonious body in the gym, to hide that they carry deeply a fear or a shyness, for not being recognized in the middle of a competition of social figures.
A body experience analyzed in detail and in context reflects a profound experience assimilated long ago or in process, which reveals a poorly lived emotion or a frustrating experience of adaptation. Considering the body as a thermometer or a compass, we take care that it is preserved in an integral way and is experienced from harmony. This means being aware and feeling emotionally, in that same bodily reality from a full connection.
The body communicates instantly what is happening in the depths of the being. Unfortunately in a society so full of noise, that manifestation is obscured and an unconscious connection between emotion and body is generated. And thus, we continue walking through life, considering to be normal a bodily manifestation which is nothing more than the externalization of a pain or suffering that we have deeply experienced.
Listening to the body is a complex task, however, it is a rewarding experience that we can live in a process of personal reinvention. Listening and experience help us to understand this corporeal dimension that is projected to transcendence—only in this way can we start or build a path towards harmony and in it one more step towards fullness.
