December 18: International Migrants Day

«Given the increase in migratory flows in the world, in 2000, the UN General Assembly proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day, with the aim of promoting the exchange of experiences and opportunities for collaboration by countries and regions in the face of the difficulties of international migration. The creation of this important event aims to make visible the challenges, difficulties, and adversities faced by migrants in the world, as well as to appeal to the nations of the world to help make migration a safe, regular, and dignified process.» (UN).

Federal Government Bets on Nearshoring

The Banco Nacional de Obras (Banobras) announced that it would finance infrastructure to take advantage of nearshoring. In this way, companies seeking to set up in Mexico to increase their reach and join supply chains will have the essential services they need to develop their investments. «Nearshoring in the short and medium term is the future of our country. We believe that the foreign investment at historic highs that we are having is due to the possibility of strengthening our relationship with the United States. Its main trading partner, Mexico, is a very relevant destination for foreign investment,» said the general director of Banobras, Jorge Mendoza Sanchez.

President López Obrador’s Electoral Reform Plan B 

The initiative intends to reform four laws and legally establish some changes that the opposition rejected last week in the Chamber of Deputies. This action is expected to reduce resources and reconfigure the structure of the Electoral Institute. The Chamber of Deputies opposition blocked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s constitutional reform in electoral matters. Obrador immediately sent Congress his so-called Plan B, reforming four secondary laws. Through it, he seeks to withdraw INE’s privileges, eliminate its trusts, and create a lighter structure which «is expected to generate savings of around 3,605,624,298 pesos.»

Christmas Events to Enjoy

Before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sanctuario Hogar Guadalupano Mexiquito had expressed the need to remodel its bathrooms, explained architect Sara Hernandez, a member of the San Miguel de Allende College of Architects. Increase in the change of land use for Airbnb

The State Congress approved the charge of 45 thousand pesos in commissions to Airbnb in San Miguel de Allende by 2023. Airbnb in San Miguel de Allende will then pay 45 thousand pesos annually for a change of land use. This came after the municipal government of San Miguel de Allende approved the proposed Revenue Law change in commissions. The amount represents an increase of 318%. Currently, the annualized charge for such a permit is 10 thousand pesos, which the last administration established. Government statistics estimate that the hotel sector of the municipality offers around 3,000 rooms in San Miguel.
