Happy 60° Anniversary of Bellas Artes!

As we know it now, the Ignacio Ramírez «El Nigromante» Cultural Center was inaugurated on August 17, 1962. Since then, it has been visited by the local public, as well as by national and international tourists who come to our destination known for its colonial architecture and colorful traditions. 

During these 60 years, teachers and students have passed through this school of arts who are already an important part of the history of San Miguel in the last third of the last century, which is parallel to the arrival of an important contingent of expatriates and the generation of hippies, some of them now recognized businessmen. To tell the truth, all these different groups, together with the San Miguel community, molded the tourist and traditional San Miguel we live in today.

China and the U.S. Strain Their Relationship with Pelosi’s Visit to Taiwan

The controversial visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress, has created strong tensions and gives rise to some comments without prejudice that everyone can have their own interpretation of. In the midst of a world of tensions that have been generated by the Russia versus Ukraine war, tensions between China and the United States, the threats between Kosovo and Serbia, as well as the recent events in Israel, have been increased this past week. For China, the September elections are taking place in the middle of an economic and real estate crisis that is affecting the middle class; for the United States, the November elections are taking place in a very complex international political climate and a domestic economy affected by high inflation. 

He Became a Trend in the Media and Social Networks Globally

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has made a proposal that will please many: simply declare a five-year truce in all conflicts to solve global problems. He believes that too much of everything has fallen on humanity lately. The coronavirus pandemic, the fighting in Ukraine, tensions over Taiwan, inflation, and the economic slowdown. These are the actions proposed by the President of Mexico: «Stimulate productive activity, generate employment, take care of the poor, and seek cooperation between countries and peoples for development.» The President unleashed all kinds of comments and ironies in the media and social networks worldwide. 

Chamber Music Festival Kicks Off

This August 12 and 13 will feature Anthony McGill on clarinet along with the Gryphon Trio to kick off the Festival de Musica de Camara events. McGill is currently the principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. He is also a former principal clarinetist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In performances, critics have noted his «. . .brilliance, penetrating and rich sound» (The New York Times). A native of Chicago, Illinois, McGill attended the Curtis Institute of Music and is an instructor at the Peabody Institute at John Hopkins University. McGill, who received the prestigious 2020 Avery Fisher Award, is one of the few African-American musicians to hold a principal position in a major orchestra. Angela Peralta Theater, 7pm to 9pm.

August 9: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 

More than 86 percent of indigenous people worldwide, compared to 66 percent of their non-indigenous counterparts, work in the informal economy. This day marks the date of the inaugural session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) organized a virtual commemoration of the International Day with the theme: «The role of indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge,» with the participation of indigenous peoples, member states, UN agencies, funds and programs, civil society, and the general public.

The Child Welfare and Development Center (CADI) Has Been Activated

The last administration invested more than 16 million pesos for the remodeling of the Child Welfare and Development Center (CADI) which includes nine classrooms, a toy library, a dining room, a kitchen with pantry, a nursing area, an administrative area, a meeting room, teachers’ bathrooms, and cubicles for personalized attention for psychology, nutrition, and teaching, with a capacity to attend to 300 children. 

The Director of the Municipal System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF), Brisa Calderón, explained to Atención that these facilities continue to be adapted and improved in order to offer appropriate attention to each child who attends.
